8 Days Cairo & Nile Cruise by Sleeper Train

Breakfast, then out into it. You'll stand at the Great Sphinx too, and walk through the Valley Temple where ancient embalming rites once took place. It's the kind of site that earns its fame. Lunch at a well-regarded local restaurant breaks up the day before your afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum. The GEM is vast — royal treasures, sacred statues, objects used by people who lived four thousand years ago. It takes time to absorb. Give yourself permission to slow down. Aswan greets you early. Our local team is on the platform; the day starts without delay. First, the High Dam — a genuinely impressive feat of 20th-century engineering that reshaped Egypt's relationship with the Nile entirely. Then Philae, the island temple of Isis, earned its reputation. Dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt on Agilkia Island to save it from rising waters after the dam was built, it carries that history in its walls — the reliefs are sharp, and the setting on the water is beautiful. After the temples, you board your Nile cruise. Check in, take a breath, have lunch on the deck as the ship begins its slow southward drift toward Kom Ombo. Breakfast on the water, then Kom Ombo. The temple is unusual — dedicated to two gods, Sobek and Horus, with the entire structure mirrored down its central axis. Worth looking closely at the walls: there are carvings of what appear to be surgical instruments, and a Nilometer used to measure annual flood levels. The detail is extraordinary. Back on board, the ship moves toward Edfu. The afternoon passes easily — lunch, then tea on deck, farmland and palm groves on both banks, the occasional traditional village. A horse-drawn carriage takes you from the dock to Edfu Temple — one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, dedicated to Horus. Built during the Ptolemaic period, it feels almost complete: the pylons, the hypostyle hall, the inner sanctuary. The inscriptions describing the battle between Horus and Seth run across entire walls. Back on the ship, lunch as you sail north toward Luxor. You arrive in the afternoon with enough light left for Luxor Temple — built during the New Kingdom, expanded by Ramses II, connected in antiquity to Karnak by the long Avenue of Sphinxes. Check out in the morning, then across to the West Bank. The Valley of the Kings, first — the painted tombs of Egypt's pharaohs, including Tutankhamun's, cut deep into the limestone hills of Deir el-Bahari. The colors inside the tombs are vivid in a way that still surprises people who've seen them in photographs for years. Hatshepsut's temple comes next, its terraced colonnades built into the cliff face — one of the most distinctive monuments in all of Egypt. Then the Colossi of Memnon, two seated giants of Amenhotep III, standing alone in an open field, quiet and enormous. Lunch in Luxor, free time in the afternoon, then the train station in the evening. You arrive in Cairo in the morning and check into your hotel. The rest of the day is yours — which might mean exactly nothing, which is sometimes the right call after six full days. If you'd rather keep moving, two options are available: Alexandria — A two-hour drive to the Mediterranean. The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the Citadel of Qaitbay — built on the remains of the ancient Lighthouse — all in a city that carries the weight of a different kind of history. Old Cairo & the Citadel — The Saladin Citadel and the Muhammad Ali Mosque in the morning, then down into Coptic Cairo, where the Hanging Church and Abu Serga sit beside the Ben Ezra Synagogue in a quarter that has held multiple faiths for centuries.
