The History of Kitchener’s Island

Kitchener's Island

The Nubians used to live in the Aswan Botanical Garden. The crew called it “Jet Narty.” Lord Horatio Kitchener bought the Island in 1899 so that his soldiers could have a place to rest. He thought this was where God lived. Lord Kitchener led the Egyptian army. Kitchener, who liked plants, turned the Island into a beautiful botanical garden. Later, the Egyptian government took back the Island and turned it into the Aswan Botanical Gardens, which are still open today.

The Aswan Botanical Island is set up like a chess board, with 27 separate squares connected by a vertical and horizontal walkways network. It’s a great way to discover what this Island offers. Thanks to the Ministry of Irrigation’s work in 1928, the Botanical Garden now has trees from all five continents. There are many plantations and trees on the Island of many different kinds. Some of the plants on the Island were already there when it was turned into a Botanical Garden, while others were brought there from other parts of the world. The Royal Palm, Sabal Palm, and Phonic Pam trees are on the Island.
