Qasr Ibrim
Qasr Ibrim All you need to know:
The only Nubian building still seen in its original place is Qasr Ibrim. It is about 60 kilometers north of Abu Simbel and used to sit on top of a 70-meter-high cliff, and it is now surrounded by water.
Evidence shows that the village of Ibrim was used as a fort as early as 1000 BC. Around the same time, the 25th dynasty Pharaoh Taharka, born in Nubia and ruled from 690 to 664 BC, built a temple for the goddess Isis out of mud bricks.
Six pagan temples in the town were converted to Christianity two centuries after the rest of Egypt, making it one of the last strongholds of paganism in Egypt during the Roman era. After that, it became one of the most important Christian centers in Lower Nubia. It fought against Islam until the 16th century when Bosnian mercenaries working for the Ottoman army took it over. At that time, Islam was getting the upper hand in the war.
The mercenaries decided to stay in the area, and some got married to Nubian people. They also turned part of the cathedral into a mosque during their time there. The most beautiful building still standing is a sandstone cathedral built on Taharka’s temple in the eighth century. The site is not open to the public because archeologists still work there.

Qasr Ibrim is still in the same place, but flooding has moved the stronghold closer to the water than it was before. A fort may have been built here as early as 1000 B.C. During Roman times, there were seven temples inside the city’s walls. One was dedicated to Isis, and another was built by the Nubian ruler Taharaqo in the 7th century B.C.
Qasr Ibrim was one of the last pagan strongholds. By the 10th century A.D., it had become Christian, and a cathedral had been built there. The cathedral stayed Christian until the 16th century when Bosnians took over the fort on the sultan’s orders. Since excavation work is ongoing, the only way to see the defense is from a lake cruise.
